Sooooo since I couldn’t get into New England’s yearly season opening dance, I decided to go to Wells for a nice workout and to get back into the feel of racing in a pack. It was fairly cold and there was alot of chatter about how all the shmucks at Marblehead will be even colder than we are. Little did I know what great news I was to get later……
I do a few warmup laps with Curt and line up. I then spent the next 50 minutes trying to stay up at the front, in the top 10 somewhere. It took quite a bit of effort, but I started feeling more and more and more comfortable forcing people off of the wheel I wanted, which made the race considerably easier.
Curt and I never talked about strategy at all, but I feel like mentally we were on the same page the entire race as every time there was a prime lap we didn’t contest it (well, Curt contested one), but pushed hard and followed just closely enough that those who did sprint for the prime weren’t able to keep pushing and start a break. Occasionally I’d chase a small group or a lone rider that looked like they might want to get away. I was really just looking to see how many times I could chase before I popped. As it turns out I didn’t pop and unintentionally it ended up being great protection/coverage for Thresholds only sprinter in the race, not that he really would have needed it anyways, haha.
With 3 to go I was spent and migrated toward the back while Curt moved up to the top 3 or so and stayed there til the end. On the final sprint I sat up and had a great view of Curt finishing the race towards the front. He took 2nd!
Can’t wait to get something more substantial than Wells Ave in this year.
